The DC movie, which hits USA theaters tomorrow, earned positive reviews from 43% of critics on the site as of 3pm ET on November 15-few enough to deem the movie "rotten" in early consensus. After irking some fans following their controversial decision to delay the reveal for 24 hours just to announce it on the site's newest Facebook show See It/Skip It, the Zack Snyder-film finally has a spot in the DC Films' RT spectrum - landing right in the middle considering all the other movies from the comic book film franchise.
The score isn't all that surprising.
The score puts Justice League in the middle of the five DC Universe films, with Wonder Woman leading at an unbelievable 92%, Man of Steel close to Justice League with 55%, and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad trailing far behind with 27% and 26%, respectively. (Both films grossed still north of $745 million worldwide, so WB can wipe their tears reading reviews with wads of cash.) Yet Justice League is way under the Wonder Woman score, as that blockbuster landed a 92 percent rating. At that point, Justice League's rate was in a better place with 48%, although we're not sure how many reviews have come in and affected the score since then to bring it down to 43%. And bottom line: Justice League is seriously ho-hum, offering negligible thrills and some screamingly ridiculous plot twists.
Either a "fresh" or a "rotten" Tomatometer score comes from Rotten Tomatoes boiling down hundreds of reviews into a single number. With no Rotten Tomatoes score, it was tough to determine whether the trickle of poor early reviews is a fluke or a consensus. Studios market top scores ahead of a film's release, while others blame the aggregation site for torpedoing their movie with negative marks, especially when a project flops domestically. Of course, the score could still change as more critics see the film over the weekend but it's probably not going to go above 50%.
"I'm sorry that everyone wasted their time and money making it", Vanity Fair critic Richard Lawson wrote in a review headlined, "'Justice League' is a big, ugly mess".
Like Rotten Tomatoes disappointment wasn't enough, Metacritic score also stands at a sad 51/100. Plus, there's now no critics consensus on Justice League's Rotten Tomatoes page, so it looks like they're giving it some special treatment. And after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was greeted to infamously negative reviews, there is even more sensitivity around Justice League's arrival. Despite the formation of an unprecedented league of heroes - Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash - it may be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
