Lamborghini's new Terzo Millennio is a self-healing supercar

It is noteworthy that the model was developed in collaboration with scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of technology.

The concept vehicle wears its Lambo DNA on its sleeve, with a sharp and swooping angular design that looks like the love child of a Le Mans Prototype auto and a stealth bomber that's been sent back in time; Terzo Millennio does translate into "the third millennium" after all.

But to support this "revolution" in energy storage systems, materials must change, too.

But what's most interesting about the MIT collaboration is the car's carbon fibre body which, Lamborghini says, is meant to store energy. In other words, it wants an electric system that delivers a whole lot of power, recharges quickly, and degrades slower than current battery technologies.

On the driving front, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio will follow suit with vehicle makers like Tesla, having all four wheels powered by independent electric motors to retain Lamborghini's all-wheel-drive hallmark in its future electric cars.

Automobili Lamborghini, in collaboration with two laboratories at MIT, has unveiled an electric super sports auto concept, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio.

Collaborating with MIT for our R&D department is an exceptional opportunity to do what Lamborghini has always been very good at: rewriting the rules on super sports cars.

"We look forward to teaming up with their engineers and work on this exciting project".

"We are embracing what is impossible today to craft the realities of tomorrow".

Focused on five aspects of supercar development, the Terzo Millennio is far more than an aesthetic exercise. Lamborghini also noted the added benefit of additional freedom for designers and aerodynamicists.

Trading batteries for supercapacitors and lightweight aluminum with self-healing, energy-storing carbon fiber, the Terzo Millennio is full of pie-in-the-sky technology promises, but its declaration is clear: some future Lamborghinis will run exclusively on electrons.

The first two were met with the help of the Dinca Research Lab (headed by MIT Department of Chemistry lead Mircea Dinca) and the Mechanosynthesis Group (run by John Hart of the Department of Mechanical Engineering).

In addition to energy storing body panels, MIT professors and Lamborghini say that the carbon fiber structure in the Terzo Millennio may be able to identify and "heal" small cracks in its substructure, presumably with liquid-filled micro-channels in its construction. To keep the weight down, the monocoque is built using Lamborghini's Forged Composite technology.
