The NFL on Monday announced the Buccaneers wide receiver has been suspended one game without pay for unsportsmanlike conduct and unnecessary roughness during Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Saints.
The suspension provides justification for New Orleans coach Sean Payton, who said after the win over the Buccaneers that Mike Evansshould have been ejected from the contest.
"My first instinct was to go help my teammate, even though I've been knowing [Evans] since Texas A&M days", said Saints CB De'Vante Harris, who knocked Evans off Lattimore. After getting poked in the back of the neck, Lattimore shoved Winston.
The Associated Press reported the scuffle erupted when quarterback Jameis Winston pressed his finger into the back of Lattimore's helmet during a dead-ball period between a failed third-down pass and a punt. Evans' actions set off a wild skirmish, resulting in a 15-yard penalty for the wideout rather than an ejection.
Evans can still appeal the suspension, but if he were to miss time, the Buccaneers would be missing their top receiver.
Evans then came from out of nowhere and leveled Lattimore.
"The Saints player responded and then Mike responded. So he was a little angry, [Evans] was". The talented wideout is still on pace to surpass the 1,000 receiving yard plateau for the fourth time in his four National Football League seasons, but overall his yardage per game and touchdowns are down.
"It doesn't matter if it's team captains or the 45th or 46th man on the roster - that's not professional", Koetter said. "I thought (Lattimore) was picking a fight with my quarterback".
