Most human drivers have been in a situation where a person begins to back up without looking behind them.
The driverless electric shuttle in downtown Las Vegas, pictured on November 9, 2017, is back on the road one day after it was involved in an accident with a truck.
The shuttle was performing a test ride with passengers downtown when it was grazed by a delivery truck around noon, the city said.
Was the driverless shuttle at fault in the accident? City officials were quick to throw the human under the.shuttle as well, with one even going so far as to tell KSNV News that the whole thing could have been avoided "had the truck had the same sensing equipment that the shuttle has". The operation is part of a 12-month pilot program, the city said. A semi-truck backed into the autonomous shuttle reportedly grazing the fender.
Created to carry up to 15 people at a time, the shuttle has a max speed of 45km/h and has been created to be fully capable of driving on public roads. In addition to surveying the shuttle's riders, AAA will examine how others sharing the streets react to it - including pedestrians and cyclists.
The shuttle itself is made by French company Navyo and is the first self-driving shuttle bus to be introduced in the US. AAA chose Las Vegas for the launch because of the state's progressive regulations on autonomous vehicles, heavy investment in innovation, the high volume of visitors and a sunny, dry climate that's favorable for testing new driving technology.
The shuttle makes a continuous loop in downtown Las Vegas, and the rides are free.
A driverless shuttle bus was in a auto accident the first day the electric vehicle was being tested in Las Vegas. The shuttle is operated and maintained by Keolis, which also led the efforts to integrate its vehicle into the smart-city infrastructure, in partnership with the city of Las Vegas and NAVYA.
Navya's autonomous electric vehicle shuttle doesn't hit overly high speeds, shuffling along a downtown circuit at around 24km/h.
