Democrat William O'Neill said he was trying to dampen the "media frenzy" over sexual assault in his post, so that politicians could get back to "legalizing marijuana and opening the state hospital network to the combat the opioid crisis".

State Supreme Court Judge Bill O'Neill, who is a Democratic candidate for state governor, made the claim on Facebook on Friday afternoon.

While O'Neill corrected the post to remove the mention of Taft, his original post was preserved for all eternity by a screenshot.

In the post, the OH gubernatorial candidate talks about being sexually intimate with "approximately 50 very attractive females", and said he was "disappointed by this national feeding frenzy about sexual indiscretions decades ago".

The post initially gave identifying details about women O'Neill had slept with, one of whom "he made passionate love [with] in the hayloft of her parent's barn". "No words can convey my shock. This gross disrespect for women shakes the public's confidence in the integrity of the judiciary".

Judge O'Neill also said he did not think it improper for a Supreme Court justice to divulge particulars of his sex life.

He added, "Justice O'Neill's Facebook comments both dehumanize women and do nothing but trivialize this important conversation, which is actually about harassment and abuse, not encounters between consenting adults". The Ohio Code of Judicial Conduct requires judges running for partisan office to resign; O'Neill contends the ethics rule doesn't apply to him because he has not yet filed his petitions for candidacy, according to the Dayton Daily News.

He also said his media representative resigned. "I figured I'd make it easy for my enemies just to say, I am not a ideal person, and I would suggest that neither are you", O'Neill said.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor also issued a statement condemning O'Neill's Facebook update.

According to OH media, Judge O'Neill must retire from the bench when his current term ends in 2019 due to age restrictions.

In a Facebook post Friday, O'Neill appeared to weigh in on widespread sexual harassment allegations coming to light, particularly those leveled against Minnesota Sen. O'Neill said the misconduct story has gone too far.

O'Neill is expected to drop out of the governor's race.
