Qualcomm sues Apple AGAIN in new row over chip code

03 November, 2017, 01:09 | Author: Kristen Ingram
  • Is Apple About To Ditch Qualcomm Chips?

Qualcomm sues Apple is a headline which isn't surprising for those who are familiar with a recent string of lawsuits between the two, which have collectively created considerable tension in and out of court. Apple made an email request for proprietary information from Qualcomm and included an Intel engineer on the distribution list, according to the suit. The escalating dispute over technology licensing fees stems from Apple's initial accusation that Qualcomm charges too much, and unfairly leverages its strong market position.

The latest lawsuit, which was filed in California state court, comes days after Bloomberg had reported that Apple is designing the latest iPhones and iPads without Qualcomm parts.

It adds that "Apple has failed to comply with the restrictions on access and use that Qualcomm required in exchange for Apple's unprecedented access to software and source code". Qualcomm is now the largest manufacturer of chips for mobile devices by far, but that could change in favor of companies like Intel and MediaTek if Apple decides to walk away for good.

Bloomberg reports that the loss of Apple's business could cut Qualcomm's revenue by 7.5 percent. Qualcomm are claiming Apple breached their contracted agreement, which was arranged regarding the software necessary for mobile chips to interact with the rest of an Apple handset.

It's already attempted to in the past, as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus carried both Intel and Qualcomm chips, as did this year's iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Apple reportedly has until June to make its decision, although that's a bit late in the game, considering that the Cupertino company usually announces its new iPhones in September.
