Roy Moore Being Persecuted Like Jesus, Says Brother After Child Abuse Allegation

11 November, 2017, 01:38 | Author: Kristen Ingram
  • Alabama GOP nominee for Senate Roger Moore

A month before Alabama's special election, Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore abruptly faced lurid allegations Thursday of sexual misconduct with minors decades ago - and an immediate backlash from party leaders who demanded he get out of the race if the accusations prove true.

"These allegations are completely false and misleading but more than that it hurts me personally, you know- I'm a father", Moore said in an interview with Sean Hannity.

The break with Moore came a day after The Washington Post reported allegations by four women who said Moore had pursued sexual relationships with them when they were teenagers. They did not have sexual intercourse, according to the report.

Zeigler, who was elected in 2014 and has not said whether he is seeking a second term, has endorsed Moore and defended Moore on the allegation by a woman in the Post story that Moore dated her and had a sexual encounter with her when she was 14 and Moore was 32.

President Trump would want Moore to step aside if the allegations against him are true, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Friday. "Moore is unfit for office and should step aside", he wrote.

Some politicians are casting doubt on the women's stories, while others are expressing dismay - and, in some cases, Republican officials are defending Moore's alleged actions as not problematic at all.

"If these allegations are true, he must step aside", McConnell said in a formal statement on behalf of all Republican senators.

"The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying", McCain tweeted. "I do not believe them".

A one-vote Jones margin, of course, gives him a Senate seat, so one way of looking at this is that an already-vulnerable GOP candidate may have been dealt a deadly blow even if a big majority of Republican voters don't believe the Washington Post allegations or don't care if they are true.

The NRSC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

During the 2012 election, Republican Senate candidates in Missouri and in made inaccurate and controversial comments about rape that allowed Democrats to make inroads with women voters across the country.

"Having read the detailed description of the incidents, as well as the response from Judge Moore and his campaign", Lee said in a statement, "I can no longer endorse his candidacy for the US Senate".

"Congressman Andy Harris owes it to his constituents and all decent Marylanders to withdraw his endorsement of Roy Moore", said Maryland Democratic Party spokesperson Fabion Seaton.

It's the distance that would matter to the state Republican party, and more so for the national party.

But Moore remains defiant and insists he will not quit the race for the 12 December special election for Attorney General Jeff Sessions' former seat.

The question this poll can not really answer is the level of detail about the allegations against Moore that voters absorbed the day they were released - presumably not a lot of Alabamians read the Washington Post - and whether the sheer creepiness of Moore's reported conduct came through.

Asked to clarify if Blunt was canceling on the fundraiser, she repeated, "He won't be in AL".

Moore himself was suspended as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court in 2016 after refusing to comply with the Supreme Court's gay marriage ruling.
