The images were later deleted from the ministry of defense's Twitter and Facebook accounts, and the ministry said several hours later that there had been a "mistake", and publishing a different set of pictures, calling them "irrefutable proof" of US aid of IS.

When Russian's Ministry of Defense first tweeted out the "evidence", they did so in multiple languages, but not all of those are available any longer.

One of the pictures in the tweet of the USA supposedly covering an ISIS convoy leaving the Abu Kamal region was actually a screenshot from an AC-130 gunship simulator video game, Bellingcat reported.

But the Conflict Intelligence Team, described by The Guardian as "Russian online investigators who fact-check claims by the Russian military", refuted the Ministry's claims in a Facebook message of its own.

Russia's defense ministry on Tuesday posted images it said proved the US was aiding the Islamic State jihadi group in the Middle East, but social media users pointed out they included a still from a video game.

With the ruse exposed, other users and national security experts were quick to point out that the rest of the photos shared by the Russian Defense Ministry were also fakes [1, 2].

"The U.S. are actually covering the ISIS combat units to recover their combat capabilities, redeploy and use them to promote the American interests in the Middle East".

The ministry said an employee had mistakenly attached the photo. In the top-right corner, you can see the beginnings of the statement from the video that claims the footage shown was work-in-progress gameplay and that all of the content shown is subject to change.

Hours later, the ministry published an updated statement with a different set of images, which it also said proved their claims. As the Syrian military's campaign outpaced a parallel anti-ISIS offensive by the US and the Syrian Democratic Forces, a mostly Kurdish coalition of Arabs and ethnic minorities, Russian Federation accused the USA of helping ISIS escape as Syrian troops and their allies closed in on Al-Bukamal earlier this week.

It repeated the claim it was "irrefutable evidence that United States are actually covering Isis [IS] combat units to recover their combat capabilities, redeploy, and use them to promote the American interests in the Middle East".

The pictures turned out to be screenshots from a video game and old videos shot in Iraq.

The ministry is investigating its civil employee who attached a wrong photo to illustrate the ministry's statement on Abu Kamal.
