  • Hunger Crisis in Yemen 2017

Two air strikes targeted the ministry late on Friday and plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the building, the rebel media network Al Masirah quoted witnesses as saying.

The Saudi-led coalition bombed the Houthi rebel-controlled Defence Ministry in Yemen's capital Sanaa, local media reported. There was no word of any casualties.

The United Nations and several humanitarian groups this week warned that millions could die in Yemen from starvation if the blockade, which includes relief aid, was not lifted.

Saudi Arabia fears that the rebels will give its Shi'Ite rival Iran a foothold in the Arabian Peninsula.

The coalition shut down Yemen's borders earlier this week after Saudi forces on Saturday intercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Huthis near the Riyadh airport.

Yemen's defenseless people have been under massive attacks by the Saudi-led coalition for more than two and half years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

According to defenseworld.net, the announcement comes after Saudi air defense forces reported that they had intercepted a ballistic missile in midair that was sacked from Yemen over northern Riyadh.

Concerned by the rise of the rebels, who are allegedly backed by Iran, Saudi Arabia and a coalition of Sunni Arab states launched a massive air campaign in 2015 aimed at reinstalling President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's government.

According to the United Nations, from March 2015 to March 2017, 16,200 people have been killed in Yemen, including 10,000 civilians. Medical experts also warn that the blockade will worsen the country's cholera outbreak, which has affected nearly 1 million people.

The conflict has left more than 8,650 people dead, including many civilians.
