'A lot of MSPs were in committee meetings so it was mostly staff in the building'.

The alarm was initially raised just after 11.30am when Police Scotland received a report of a suspicious package.

Staff were allowed to return to the MSP building, where members have their offices, at about 13:15.

Police have evacuated part of the Scottish parliament after an incident said to involve the discovery of a white powder in several packages sent to Conservative MSPs.

Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston was caught up in a security alert at Holyrood.

Part of the building was evacuated after the packages, one of which was said to contain white powder, were sent to the offices of four Tory MSPs. The MSP block is now closed.

"No other areas of the Holyrood campus are now affected and the Parliament remains open to the public at present".

The offices of Liz Smith, Jamie Halcro-Johnston, Edward Mountain are now closed off while business continues as usual in the other parts of the building. "Parliament staff are working to assess the situation", the Holyrood spokesman said.

Emergency services attended the scene before police ruled there were no suspicious circumstances.

"Our incident management team in consultation with the emergency services are reviewing whether further measures are necessary".

Edinburgh Police has confirmed it is responding to an ongoing incident.

"The public are thanked for their patience and support during this matter".
