The boat's carrying capacity is 24 people. They said that the passengers were stuck beneath the boat and despite having the life jackets they were struggling to come out. Nearby fishermen rescued 17 people, District Collector B Lakshmikantham told reporters.

According to Vijayawada police, the motor boat with a three-man crew was ferrying 38 passengers from Bhavani Island to Pavitra Sangamam near Ibrahimpatnam on the outskirts of Vijayawada for a religious ceremony on Karthika Masam. Swimmers and local fishermen rescued 15 passengers as the boat capsized.

The state government on Sunday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs to the families of the bereaved.

Thirty-two of the victims belonging to Ongole town were on a picnic tour.

National Disaster Response Force personnel were pressed into service to launch rescue operations, but these were hampered with the sunset.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa, leader of opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and others expressed grief over the tragedy.
