In Alberta's largest cities, the unemployment rate also came down in October, but it remains above the provincewide rate and well above the national average.

The agency said the number of full-time positions swelled by 88,700, while part-time employment dropped by 53,400 jobs.

Analysts in a Reuters poll had forecast 15,000 extra jobs and predicted the unemployment rate would stay at 6.2 percent.

Statistics Canada on Friday reported a net gain of 35,300 jobs - all of them due to a boost in full-time positions - but added the jobless rate had edged up to 6.3 percent as more people sought work.

The data reveals the expected slowing of Canada's labor market has yet to materialize, potentially casting some questions about whether the Bank of Canada can continue to maintain a wait-and-see strategy toward raising interest rates.

Its monthly report on labour rates says the jobless rate jumped from 5.8% in September, to 6.9% in October.

However, offsetting the jobs report, Statistics Canada also reported a $3.2-billion trade deficit for September, essentially unchanged from the previous month, which was revised to $3.2 billion compared with an initial estimate of $3.4 billion.

In Saskatoon, the rate is down slightly to 7.6 per cent, while Regina's is even lower at 5.4.

"Every quality measure we typically look at in the employment report was on the side of angels", he said.

The workforce grew by 4,700 people between September and October, as 1,000 jobs were lost. The participation rate increased to 65.7 per cdent Goods-producing industries were behind the gain in October, generating 33.9k jobs versus 1.4k jobs in services All the new jobs were in the private sector.
