Trump lifts trophy ban

The Trump administration officially supports trophy hunting, and is repealing an Obama era ban on the import of African elephant trophies.

Trump administration thinks it's ok to hunt African lions and elephants and bring their heads to the country.

In this photo taken on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, an elephant is seen in Hwange National Park in west Zimbabwe.

"Trophy hunting causes prolonged, vast suffering for elephants and fuels demand for wild animal products, opening the door for further exploitation", Hogan said.

"The United States has listed African elephants under the federal Endangered Species Act, and hunting trophies can only be imported if the federal government finds that killing them positively enhances the survival of the species".

Wayne Pacelle, president of the Human Society, called the permit system "a venal and nefarious pay-to-slay arrangement that Zimbabwe has set up with the trophy hunting industry" in a blog post, and noted conservationists' concerns over "lack of information about how money derived from trophy hunting by USA hunters is distributed within Zimbabwe". Wayne Pacelle, the president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, said the policy change sends the wrong signal amid worldwide efforts to curb illegal poaching.

The reversal applies to elephants hunted in Zimbabwe on or after January 21 2016, and on or before December 31 2018, and elephants hunted in Zambia during 2016 2017 and 2018.

"What kind of message does it send that poor Africans who are struggling to survive can not kill elephants in order to use or sell their parts to make a living, but that it's just fine for rich Americans to slay the beasts for their tusks to keep as trophies?" he wrote. The fact is, trophy hunting does not help conservation efforts, although those who defend the cowardly sport often make claims to the contrary.

It only relates to elephants, but campaigners fear it will open up the flood gates to other endangered animals being hunted.

African elephants are listed as Threatened under the U.S. As a result, the number of African elephants has shrunk from about 5 million a century ago to about 400,000 remaining. Under the prior administration, FWS made the eminently reasonable decision that Zimbabwe - one of the most corrupt countries on earth - was not managing its elephant population in a sustainable manner.

Zimbabwe was plunged into political uncertainty this week after the country's longtime President Robert Mugabe was placed under house arrest by the country's army.

"While regulated, responsible hunting has indeed been part of the North American conservation movement with groups like Ducks Unlimited promoting the conservation agenda".

"Corruption was already a huge concern in Zimbabwe, and it's shocking that Zinke is lifting the trophy ban during a military coup", she said.
