Trump to LaVar Ball: 'I should have left them in jail!'

  • President Trump Blasts Father of Recently Released UCLA Player for Being Unappreciative of His Help in Gaining Son’s Release

Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly told the Times the president was instrumental in their release, bringing it up with China's Xi Jinping. But, Lavar Ball later suggested in an ESPN interview that Trump had little to do with the matter.

"Do you think the three UCLA Basketball Players will say thank you President Trump?". "Like I told him, 'They try to make a big deal out of nothing sometimes.' I'm from LA".

Upon their return they held a press conference to apologize and thank the president as well as the Chinese government for letting them go without prosecution.

Balls's son LiAngelo, as well as Jalen Hill and Cody Riley were detained in Hangzhou, about 100 miles southwest of Shanghai, on shoplifting charges a day before Trump arrived in China for his Asia tour. "Don't tell me nothing".

The case drew great attention in the United States because LiAngelo's elder brother Lonzo has been a star for the Los Angeles Lakers in his debut season.

LiAngelo Ball was arrested in China and charged with shoplifting along with two of his UCLA teammates just days before the Bruins were scheduled to play Georgia Tech. "We really appreciate you helping us out", Riley said.

I'm happy with how things were handled.

This was Trump's response to Ball essentially saying "Trump who?" when asked on Saturday about the president's role in getting LiAngelo out of trouble.

Fredricka Whitfield spoke with Stelter this afternoon on how "the way this President prioritizes is very confusing to a lot of people". "I've seen a lot worse things happen than a guy taking some glasses", he said. In a Sunday morning tweet, Trump criticized LaVar Ball for being "unaccepting for what I did for his son".

On Wednesday, UCLA coach Steve Alford announced the players were suspended indefinitely.

Which somehow manages to both be accurate - Trump was making it a bigger deal - and totally cavalier about committing crimes in foreign countries - shoplifting in China is different than shoplifting in L.A.!
