Uber Partners With NASA to Bring Flying Taxis to LA by 2020

Holden also mentioned that Uber recently entered into a Space Act Agreement with NASA to help turn their flying-taxi vision of the future into a reality.

The price of flight across Los Angeles, with 200-mph speed and VTOL technology, would be "price competitive" with Uber's vehicle service, but much faster, Uber said.

Moreover, Holden said it would actually be cheaper to fly with Uber than your own vehicle.

You see, drones and other low-altitude "recreational aircraft" are now so prolific in the USA that NASA has been working with the Federal Aviation Authority to deliver a "Next Gen" air traffic control system. After her order code is scanned in her cell phone, she gets into an Uber flying taxi, a plane-helicopter hybrid aircraft with fixed wings and tilt prop-rotors.

Uber merely wants to connect the dots and be a pioneer in urban air commuting, and its partnership with NASA will set the groundwork for all flying taxi services that plan to launch during the 2020s and beyond. "It's been a really interesting process getting our vehicle manufacturing partners aligned on performance specifications, so that they're building vehicles that align with what we need to make Elevate successful", Holden said.

It is the first time that has formally partnered with a federal USA agency.

Uber joins several other companies that are working with NASA to develop methods for managing fleets of aerial vehicles. By the way, technically, such a vehicle would be more plane than auto.

The goal is to make transportation fast, and affordable - and it hopes the service will be ready for commercial operations "several years ahead" of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

UberAir taxis will take off and lad vertically (VTOL) and operate at low altitudes.

The company announced similar trials in Dallas and Dubai earlier this year.

Uber's chief product officer Jeff Holden has been making some bold claims.

"UberAir will be performing far more flights on a daily basis than it has ever been done before". So, why, exactly, in this futuristic concept of what life with working VTOLs is like, did Uber shoot this scene?

According to CNBC, the company also signed partnership deals with aircraft manufacturers and real estate companies to develop take-off and landing sites for their flying cars.
