Why a Star Wars game is making Reddit really mad

  • Star Wars Battlefront II

Imagine that your shiny, shrink-wrapped copy of Star Wars Battlefront 2 just arrived in the mail from Amazon. For comparison, it appears the next-most downvoted comment of all time caught a measly score of -24,000, and that was because the user actually asked for downvotes. "It's clear that more changes were needed", he writes. You do not encourage horrendous grinding curves that encourage microtransaction boosts to unlock heroes and try to flip it on the community to tell players that grinding for dozens of hours drives "a sense of pride and accomplishment".

But in the case of Battlefront 2, allowing reviewers to unlock these heroes early ensures that their experience of the most divisive facet of the game isn't representative of what the average player will endure, with them not being forced to embark upon a lengthy grind in order to play as their favorite characters. For example, you're bound to earn more credits if you can be the one to recover the item in a game of Strike, or take out the enemy bombers in a game of Starfighter Assault. We're reducing the amount of credits needed to unlock the top heroes by 75%.

Sure, playing a game for hours to earn characters is (probably, depending on what you do) more fun than going to work, but at over 170 hours to unlock all the characters by playing vs. less than a tenth of that for the necessary cash, it seems like a better use of time at this point to just pick up some extra hours of actual work. According to DICE, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader can now be obtained for 15,000 credits (a 75 percent reduction), Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca and Leia for 10,000 credits, and Iden Versio at 5,000 credits.

This is being brought into effect today, with an update that will be applied to the Play First Trial, which rolls through to the full game when that releases. Yep, that's likely a separate 40 hours you'll have to commit to earning in-game credits.

"There's been a lot of discussion around the amount of in-game credits (and time) it takes to unlock some of our heroes", reads an excerpt of today's company blog post. And we continue to make adjustments based on your feedback as the game launches worldwide this week. More information on that AMA will be coming down the pipeline shortly, but for now, head down to the comments section and let us know if this change is enough to get you to reconsider your stance on Battlefront 2.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.

Electronic Arts' highly anticipated first-person shooter Star Wars Battlefront II will come out Friday, but some players' excitement for the game has been seriously tempered by frustration.
