Drinking red wine can make you want to whisk your partner off to bed. This global study suggests even today consuming spirits is more likely to result in feelings of aggression than other drinks, ' says study co-author Professor Mark Bellis. They may also be consumed in different social occasions so people may be drinking them deliberately to feel the drunken effect quickly while other types of drink are more likely to be consumed slowly or with food.

For people drinking red wine, more drinkers said they felt relaxed, with 53% of respondents saying they felt this way, and 60% of people saying they felt exhausted after drinking.

Spirits were the least likely to be associated with feeling relaxed (20 per cent); red wine was the most likely to elicit this feeling (just under 53 per cent) followed by beer (around 50 per cent). Almost a third of spirit drinkers linked tipples like gin, rum and whisky with feelings of aggression compared with only 2.5 per cent of red wine drinkers.

If you drink the hard stuff, you're much more likely to feel energized, confident, and sexy; those three emotions clocked in at 58.36 percent, 59.08 percent, and 42.42 percent, respectively. This can result in a quicker stimulating effect as blood alcohol levels increase. On the other hand, intake of higher concentration alcoholic drinks will trigger all kinds of emotions in the minds of females, except the feel of aggression.

Men were significantly more likely than women to associate aggression with all types of alcohol. More than 40 percent ticked "sexy" on the survey.

'Results from these analyses can be used by public health bodies to better understand alcohol consumption behaviour and to inform strategies and interventions to promote changes in consumption, particularly among heavier drinkers, ' they said.

The researchers from Public Health Wales and King's College London conclude: "Understanding emotions associated with alcohol consumption is imperative to addressing alcohol misuse, providing insight into what emotions influence drink choice between different groups in the population". Negative feelings such as aggression (30%), restlessness (28%) and tearfulness (22%) give significant cause for concern.

It also suggested that the likelihood of a person feeling aggressive after drinking was increased among people who had a higher dependancy on alcohol. Factors including where alcohol is consumed were considered as important factors. But it's not all doom and gloom in the spirit world; vodka, gin and rum turned out to be the most energy and confidence boosting cocktails of the bunch, with more than half of all respondents admitting to feelings of Dutch courage.
