Pulwama (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], Dec 26 (ANI): An encounter is reportedly underway in Karnabal Samboora area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district between the terrorists and the security forces on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Besides Uri attack, Chota Noora was allegedly involved in a grenade attack on a minister's cavalcade in Tral, in September this year.

Tantray hailed from Tral area and his death is being seen as a blow to the terror group as he was the key man in reviving the JeM in south and central Kashmir.

The encounter took place in Samboora village in Pulwama district of South Kashmir.

"No-one would suspect him to be a terrorist and that is why JeM recruited him as an over-ground worker", the officer said.

Malik said the operation - that began on Monday evening and ended early on Tuesday - was a big success for security forces as Tantray was wanted in connection with a number of militancy-related incidents. Police said Tantray's body was recovered, along with his weapon, from the rubble of the house. During the search operation as they are in forest its hard to identify their location.

Police sources said Tantray was a close aide of Gazi Baba, the slain Pakistani Jaish commander and mastermind of the December 2001 Parliament attack, but had no role in that assault.

Jammu and Kashmir police chief Shesh Paul Vaid said that there were inputs that the militants were present and planning to attack a convoy on the National Highway.

In January 2011, Tantray and four others, including two from Kashmir, were sentenced to life imprisonment by a POTA court in Delhi.

Afting jumping the parole, he joined JeM and has been a major perpetrator in several attacks on the forces in Kashmir.

Chhota Noora was granted 21-days parole in 2015, but he jumped the parole and never returned to jail.

Police say at least six protesters were injured in the protests. Referring to the terrorist outfit, an official from the Ministry of Home Affairs said, "Their fighting strength has gone down".
