Legendary sportscaster Dick Enberg, whose career spanned six decades and concluded in 2016 as the San Diego Padres primary play-by-play television broadcaster, was being mourned Friday. He graduated from Central Michigan University and went to pursue Masters and Doctorate degrees from Indiana University. He won 13 Sports Emmy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Emmy.

AJ Cassavell of MLB.com summarized Enberg's career at the time of his retirement and said he called 42 National Football League seasons, 28 Wimbledons, 15 NCAA basketball championship games, 10 Super Bowls, nine Rose Bowls and a World Series to go along with 14 Emmy awards and nine Sportscaster of the Year awards.

"As the voice of generations of fans, Dick was a masterful storyteller, a consummate professional and a true gentleman".

Born in Mount Clemens, Michigan, in 1935, Enberg played college baseball at Central Michigan University, according to the Walk of Fame organization, and a student-athlete academic center at the school bears his name. Along with his Emmys, Enberg has received many other award including the Curt Gowdy Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame, the Pete Rozelle Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Ronald Reagan Media Award.

He called the 1979 Final Four championship game between Michigan State and Indiana State. He was also the voice behind "The Game of the Century", in which the University of Houston snapped UCLA's NCAA-record 47-game win streak in 1968. He has also been named National Sportscaster of the Year three times. Then in 1975, he was hired by NBC to broadcast college basketball. "That became a monumental event".
