Apple made the obvious reply, denying the allegations and alleging that Qualcomm's patents were invalid anyway.

Qualcomm then countersued Apple in the summer for infringing on its battery saving patents.

According to a report by Engadget, Apple and Qualcomm both sued each other on the same day, with Apple filing a suit against Qualcomm accusing that its Snapdragon chips infringe upon its patents, whereas Qualcomm is alleging that that Apple's phones ranging from the iPhone 7 to the iPhone X violate 16 of its patents, including power-saving methods, interfaces and even camera autofocus.

The Apple patents involve ensuring each part of a phone's processor draws only the minimum power needed, turning off parts of the processor when they are not needed and making sleep and wake functions work better. In one case, Qualcomm says Apple is relying on its patented technology to create the iPhone's Portrait Mode effect.

The filings were issued yesterday, shortly after Apple filed its own patent infringement lawsuit against Qualcomm.

The latter filed its patent breach case at the same time it submitted a complaint with the International Trade Commission asking to stop the import of Apple iPhones that have Intel Corp chips due to the alleged patent violations.

The dispute between Apple and Qualcomm over patents is part of a wide-ranging legal war between the two companies.

Apple's countersuit comes just weeks after Qualcomm accused Apple of sharing proprietary code with Intel. In a related suit, Qualcomm sued the contract manufacturers that make Apple's phones, but Apple joined in to defend them.

"Apple's patents are critical to what consumers value in a handset - cutting-edge functionality with superior battery life", said the company in the lawsuit.

It is purely a coincidence that many of Qualcomm's chips find their way into Android smartphones.
