Apple's iPhone Slow Down Got The Company Slapped With A Huge Lawsuit

  • PSA: iPhone slow? Try replacing your battery! : iphone - Reddit

As batteries get older, they don't hold their charges as well as newer batteries, and can have worse problems when the charge is low or the temperature is cold.

As iPhone owners for "several years", Bogdanovich and Speas are seeking class-action status, targeting both nationwide and California classes of those who owned an iPhone with models earlier than the iPhone 8.

All smartphone batteries degrade over time so it is not unusual for Apple to be slowing down the performance of its older phones to help prolong their battery life, according to experts.

If you think your older iPhone seems to run slower, you're not insane.

It also fanned speculation by some about whether Apple slows down old iPhones to pressure users to upgrade to a newer model.

According to Apple's statement, the batteries' inability to keep up with those demands resulted in "instantaneous peaks" which "can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components". However, Stefan Bogdanovich argues in his lawsuit that this practice isn't disclosed to iPhone customers when they sign their contracts with Apple.

They were reacting to Apple's statement on Wednesday - in response to a claim by an app company earlier this week - that it had introduced a software feature past year to prevent phones from unexpectedly shutting down.

The feature, which slows performance to demand less power, has been extended to iPhone 7 handsets with the latest iOS operating software and will be added to other Apple products "in the future", the spokesperson said. They allege it intentionally interfered with the phones to damage them, which became a "substantial factor in causing ... to replace iPhones, buy new batteries, or loss of usage of their iPhone". Poole explained that users expect their phones to perform the same regardless of how old the battery is, but his tests indicated that wasn't the case.

What it really comes down to, though, is whether customers trust Apple enough to believe that this measure only exists as a failsafe on top of doing everything they reasonably can to ensure the best possible performance, for the longest possible span of time, for the price consumers are paying for their phones, and that kind of good faith is really hard to come by, for good reason.

Apple Is Forcing Customers To Upgrade By Sabotaging Older Devices, Investigations Found
It's $79 if you have Apple do it, or around $70 to $50 if you have a third-party fix shop or service take care of it. That absolutely makes the phone more useable - it apparently helps stop random shutdowns too, which are a major pain.
