  • Dakota Allen will return for his senior year at Texas Tech

The Texas Tech Red Raiders lost to the South Florida Bulls in the Birmingham Bowl, 38-34, on Saturday, Dec. 23, at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The Red Raiders, meanwhile, are allowing 31.8 points per game, 434 yards per game, and rank 124th in the nation in passing yards allowed. The Red Raiders held South Florida to 132 total yards in the first 30 minutes and contained Flowers. After forcing a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, USF took over at the Texas Tech 43-yard line and worked their way into the end zone, this time ending the drive with Flowers running off to the right side to find a clear path for a game-tying touchdown.

This isn't a killer loss for the Red Raiders, but a win would've meant a lot to the program.

Texas Tech continued to pile up the yards but the South Florida defense kept the Red Raiders out of the end zone and off the scoreboard in the second quarter.

Vasher finished his second season in Lubbock with 24 catches for 461 yards and five TDs. Senior defensive tackle Deadrin Senat finished the game with three sacks. Texas Tech scored five plays later on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Shimonek to Dylan Cantrell to give the Red Raiders a 17-10 lead at the 11:25 mark of the quarter.

South Florida's most impactful player is quarterback Quinton Flowers, who can make plays in the air and on the ground.

Two of Texas Tech's best weapons were on full display against South Florida. The Red Raiders results included: a field goal, turnover on downs, punt, and two interceptions before the break as both squads went into the locker room knotted up at 10-10.

A play into USF's next drive, Flowers threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Scantling to put USF up, 31-27, over Tech with 4:26 left in the game.

Key Play: Flowers' fumble on the second play of the half. This time the Red Raiders couldn't seal the deal.

He ran 13 and 21 yards for first downs, the latter coming on a third-and-10 play.

But the Red Raiders left Flowers and the Bulls too much time to strike back, and strike back they most certainly did.

Texas Tech's defense started the Birmingham Bowl well.

Texas Tech drove into USF territory but only came way with a 33-yard field goal from Hatfield. Senior running back Justin Stockton rushed for 103 yards in 18 carries, and junior running back Tre King had one rushing touchdown.

Tech answered when Shimonek threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to a wide open T.J. Vasher in the end zone after busted coverage from USF. Shimonek put the Red Raiders up 34-31 with a touchdown pass with 1:31 left to play. He concluded it on a 21-yard touchdown pass to McCants with 51 seconds left to tie it at 10.
