Mayawati's remarks came a day after her party came second to the BJP in the civic body polls held in Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress which once again failed to make a mark also compared the performance of the ruling party where elections were held through EVMs with those where ballot papers were used. In places where the state election commission had used the conventional ballot paper, BJP's vote share has gone considerably down, they claimed.

Earlier in the morning, Ms Mayawati said "with full confidence" that the BJP would be defeated in the general elections due in 2019 if ballot papers were used in place of EVMs. If the BJP believes people are with them, they must implement it. "I can guarantee if ballot papers are used, BJP won't come to power", she said. The BSP managed to bag two mayoral seats of Aligarh and Meerut but the Samajwadi Party and the Congress drew a blank.

Sanajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, who have been the state's chief ministers, also claimed the BJP perpetuating the "EVM fraud" to win the elections.

"BJP has only won 15% seats in Ballot paper areas and 46% in EVM areas", he tweeted. Samajwadi party has won 45 seats.

According to a statement, the party said the BJP won 14 out of 16 contests for mayor as the voting was done through EVMs, while the party had won fewer seats for other posts where the voting was by ballot paper. "The results haven't been out yet and they have already started making excuses for their defeat". Similarly in Nagar Panchayat chairman's post, BJP won 100 seats and lost 337 seats while in Nagar Panchayat members, it lost 4728 seats and won just 662 seats.

BJP candidates have won maximum seats of Mayor and Chairman in Municipal Corporations and Nagar Palika Parishads. This is barely 28 per cent, which is less than the passing percentage of 33. BJP stood in sharp contrast at 1,586, followed by 903 of SP, 477 of BSP, 271 of Congress and 36 of AAP. The voters have given a befitting reply to the baseless allegations levelled by them.
