"We are very proud to be working with Boom on the advancement in the commercial aviation industry", Japan Airlines president Yoshiharu Ueki said in a joint statement. That reduces the risk of noise pollution caused by a sonic boom.

Boom's aircraft design is meant to be able to achieve speeds of Mach 2.2 during regular cruising flight, and can traverse up to 8,334 km on a single tank with seating for up to 55 customers with Business Class-type comfort and accommodations - as well as airfares in line with current Business Class pricing, despite cutting travel times drastically.

If Boom does succeed with its new generation of superfast planes, it will be the first...

Shaving off considerable travel time won't come cheap though.

The company has said previously it expected fares to be similar to what is offered for business class travel now. "To get there you have to improve fuel efficiency, but step-by-step supersonic air travel will become available for everyone".

In terms of progress on making its supersonic jet a reality, Boom is in the process of selecting a production site for its aircraft, and hopes to have its commercial jet in service by 2023.

X Under the deal, Japan's No. 2 carrier has the option to buy 20 aircraft and will help with aircraft design. "JAL's passionate, visionary team offers decades of practical knowledge and wisdom on everything from the passenger experience to technical operations".

JAL has actually already been working with Boom for over a year, according to Boom founder and CEO Blake Scholl, but this more clearly formalizes the relationship. We're thrilled to be working with JAL to develop a reliable, easily maintained aircraft that will provide revolutionary speed to passengers.

"Our goal is to develop an airliner that will be a great addition to any global airline's fleet", Scholl said. For obvious reasons, many of its global flights are long - Boom's jets could dramatically reduce that travel time for passengers willing to pay a premium.

The Asian flag-carrier has ploughed $10m (£7.5m) into a scheme led by United States firm Boom Supersonic. JAL also has the option to purchase up to 20 Boom aircraft through a pre-order arrangement.
