After a Senate vote on Tuesday, Kirstjen Nielsen has been confirmed as John Kelly's replacement to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

Nielsen was Kelly's chief of staff when he headed the department and followed him to the White House, where she served as his principal deputy chief of staff.

"It has been an honor to serve as the Department's Acting Secretary, and I look forward to working alongside Ms. Nielsen as her deputy as we continue to carry out the DHS mission of safeguarding the American people, our homeland, and our values", she said in a statement.

Nielsen, 45, will take the reins of a department with more than 240,000 employees responsible for immigration enforcement, US border and airport security, disaster response, and protecting USA infrastructure from cyber attacks.

While Nielsen reportedly "waffled", ultimately not leaving her post as the DHS chief of staff at the time, the role would have effectively made her the head of cyber operations for the agency. She served in the Transportation Security Administration during the George W. Bush administration and has also worked as a private-sector cybersecurity consultant.

Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson said in a statement that Nielsen had not yet shown "she has the ability to lead a workforce of 240,000 while keeping the country safe and secure", and said DHS had so far been used as a "political tool of the White House".

Nielsen said at her confirmation hearing last month that climate change is a crucial issue and said the Trump administration is revising its climate models to better respond to rising sea levels.

CBN News National Security Correspondent Erik Rosales first reported that President Donald Trump would nominate Nielsen.

On Wednesday, Nielsen was sworn in to lead DHS, taking over the agency from Duke. Kamala Harris, D-Calif, who voted against Nielsen's nomination, criticized her stances on immigration and the environment, as well as her experience.

The Times noted that a bipartisan group of former homeland security officials, including two former secretaries of the department, Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff, both Republicans who served under Mr.

We have not seen any report about Nielsen's views on the Trump administration's position on whether "Dreamers", as those who qualified for USA residency under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are often called, should be allowed to stay in the United States. Original DACA recipients were unaffected, and individuals who had received three year validity periods for DACA and the associated work authorization under the November 2014 memorandum prior to the district court injunction were allowed to maintain those approvals through their expiration, unless terminated or revoked for case specific reasons.
