  • Illinois No Longer 5th Most Populous State in US Census Bureau

Idaho saw its population boom by 2.2% over the a year ago, leading the nation in population growth during that period, according to U.S. Census Bureau data estimates released Wednesday.

Over the past year, the population increased by 1.9 percent - or slightly more than 57,500 people - and closely followed behind similar surges in Idaho at 2.2 percent and Nevada at 2.0 percent.

The agency says that's about 37,000 more people living in the state.

The population increase is beneficial because businesses move where talent lives, Rogers said.

Idaho came in at No. 1, with a 2.2 percent increase to 1.7 million from July 1, 2016 to July 1, 2017. Congress has capped the number of House seats at 435 since 1929, so every 10 years the seats are reallocated among the 50 states based on their current share of the national population. IL had the largest numeric decline, losing 33,703 people (a relatively small percentage change compared to its population of 12.8 million).

As for why the decline is happening, Harger said it could be linked to a declining birth rate for the state, a drop in domestic migration - meaning people coming to IL from other states - and a "leveling off" of foreign migration.

California, Texas, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania remain the top five most populous states. Many neighboring states, like Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and MI, all saw moderate population gains during the same period. In 2017, 38.0 percent of the nation's population lived in the South and 23.8 percent lived in the West.

By total population, Colorado grew from 5,530,105 to 5,607,154 during the one-year period, and was up from 5,029,325 in 2010, the Census Bureau said.

Idaho had the highest rate of growth, at 2.2 percent.

The estimates for Puerto Rico are as of July 1, 2017, and therefore do not reflect the effects of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.

However, net global migration decreased 1.8 percent - the first drop since 2012 to 2013.

Iowa, meanwhile, gained 14,842 people for an estimated population of 3,145,711.
