Deputy PM criticizes U.S. for veto on United Nations resolution condemning Jerusalem decision

A UN Security Council resolution calling for the withdrawal of Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem (al-Quds) as Israel's capital has been backed by every council member except the USA, which used its veto.
The Egypt-drafted text sought to ensure that any attempts to alter the characteristics or demographic composition of the Old City of Jerusalem had no effect and were rescinded.
Egypt put forward the draft resolution which insisted that Jerusalem was an issue "to be resolved through negotiations" between Israel and the Palestinians and expressed "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem", without specifically mentioning Trump's move.
Abbas emphasized that the Palestinian Authority would resort to the UN General Assembly for the adoption of a set of resolutions, and said in this context that the PA would deploy all efforts in order to get full membership.
Trump has tasked his son-in-law Jared Kushner with mediating peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
In his opening remarks to the Palestinian leadership meeting Monday evening, President Mahmoud Abbas said Palestinians will return to the United Nations to seek full membership for Palestine, while announcing a series of countermeasures against the USA move.
Trump's announcement triggered denunciations and demonstrations around the world.
Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal capital and wants all embassies based there.

Echoed by Abbas, he said that the USA "destroyed" the two state solution and "undermined all peace efforts".
"This counter-stance against unilateral steps on Jerusalem's recognition as the capital of Israel shows that we are not alone, and our actual concern should be the free world", Merzuk Ali El Ganim, Kuwait's parliament speaker, said in a written statement.
