A doctor in India mistakenly declared a newborn as dead shortly after delivering the boy's twin sister.

The girl was stillborn and the boy was declared dead after being in intensive care, according to local reports.

The services of two doctors at a leading private hospital in Indian capital city New Delhi were terminated for incorrectly declaring newly born twins "dead", while one of them was alive, officials said Monday.

"When we opened the bag, we found the boy breathing".

Indian TV showed images of yellow plastic bags in which the bodies were reportedly wrapped by the hospital and returned to the family.

He said the family had been preparing to perform the last rites in line with Hindu funeral traditions when a relative felt one of the bags wriggling in his lap. "I was shocked. I couldn't believe my eyes", Praveen Malik, the twin's grandfather, told CNN.

"We don't want to keep our baby at Max hospital.

A P Mehta and Dr. Vishal Gupta in the case relating to the twin extreme pre-term babies", said the hospital in a statement Sunday, as reported by The Hindustran Times.

Following this, the Delhi Police sent a notice to the administration of the Max Hospital, seeking detailed information in connection with the case and asked the authorities to be present for an interrogation. The decision was taken late at night by the hospital authorities after having an initial discussion with the expert committee group formed by the hospital.

The hospital authorities in a statement said the inquiry by the expert group was still in process but they have made a decision to terminate the services of two treating doctors, Dr. A. P. Mehta and Dr. Vishal Gupta in the case. The baby, meanwhile, remains critical at a nursing home in Pitampura. Family members are unsure if the newborn will survive.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Kumar Jain on Saturday said if the Max hospital continued with the negligence, the state government would cancel their licence.
