Facebook strikes first major music rights deal with Universal Music

Facebook Inc. and record label Universal Music Group have signed a multiyear deal that will let Facebook users share videos that contain the label's music. "Music lovers, artists, and writers will all be right at home as we open up creativity, connection, and innovation through music and video".

Over the past few years, Facebook has been more aggressive with removing videos with copy-written music, but this could allow the rules to be slightly more lax while having UMG taking a cut of ad revenue.

Before anything like that, though, there'll be support for sharing music and music videos with other social network users.

"There is a magnetic relationship between music and community building".

Universal Music Group also has signed an agreement with YouTube.

"This partnership is an important first step demonstrating that innovation and fair compensation for music creators are mutually reinforcing - they thrive together", said Michael Nash, the label group's executive vice president of digital strategy.

Terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, but it will span multiple years, changing the way consumers experience social media, and affecting how the music industry and artists will use social media to capitalize on their product.

Last year, the site made a concerted push into livestreaming with Facebook Live, letting users with a smartphone broadcast everything from press conferences to their dinner parties to the world at large. There is also speculation that this could bolster Facebook's attempts to get further into the video market with high-end video content. "We are excited to bring that to life on Facebook, Instagram, Oculus, and Messenger in partnership with Universal Music Group", said Tamar Hrivnak, Facebook's head of music business development and partnerships. YouTube has received criticism for not adequately paying artists for streams of their music videos.

Earlier this month, Facebook released its own collections of songs and song effects.
