Freddie Mercury biopic movie hires new director after Bryan Singer was sacked

  • Dexter Fletcher

Fletcher only has a few directing credits to his name - Wild Bill (2011), Sunshine on Leith (2013) and Eddie the Eagle (2016) - but he's also an established actor who's been working since 1976.

Singer had managed to finish shooting principle photography before he was booted from the project, thus the question of who receives directorial credit is still up in the air.

Singer was sacked Monday for what a source close to 20th Century Fox told ABC News was a pattern of unreliable behavior on the set. Only two weeks of production remained when Singer was sacked when he failed to return to the London set of the film, which stars Mr. Robot's Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Singer claimed to be caring for "a gravely ill parent", while the film's star, Rami Malek, cried foul, characterizing Singer as unreliable and unprofessional.

"'Bohemian Rhapsody' is a passion project of mine".

In a statement issued through his lawyer, Singer said he had asked for time off to deal with a "pressing" family matter. He added, "This was a very taxing experience, which ultimately took a serious toll on my own health".

"Unfortunately, the studio was unwilling to accommodate me and terminated my services", Singer wrote.

Last month, Singer shared a photo on his Instagram of Malek playing the late Queen frontman, captioning it: "Couldn't help myself and had to post this iPhone pic".

The film, about British rock band Queen and its frontman, is expected to be released as scheduled on December 25, 2018.

The film, starring Rami Malek, Joe Mazello, Ben Hardy, and Gwilyn Lee, covers a key period in the life of the band Queen, which Mercury fronted.
