In June, Google revealed its plans to have the browser start blocking certain types of ads, like autoplay videos. Once Chrome's ad blocker goes live on February 15, sites that have been in violation of the Better Ads Standard for more than 30 days will have all ads blocked until they fix the portions that are in violation and are resubmitted for approval. The program will certify web publishers that adopt the principles of the Better Ad Standards, or those that agree not to run the most disruptive ads. It's banned all full-page ad interstitials, ads that unexpectedly play sound, and flashing ads, and this week announced the Better Ads Experience Program, which provides guidelines for companies to improve users' experience with online ads. If they do not, however, it is likely they never intended their ad blocker to do much blocking of ads in the first place. Obviously, this isn't going to block all ads like other ad blocking add-ons do.

Announced on Monday, the Coalition for Better Ads Experience Program is a voluntary initiative created to improve the online ad experience for both consumers and publishers. Site owners can then submit their sites for a review after any violating ads have been removed.

This won't block all ads on all websites - instead, it'll stop those that are deemed overly annoying or intrusive.

Sites that are in violation of these guidelines can be reported to Google's Ad Experience Report.

An ad can get negative strikes against it towards that failing grade by autoplaying video, taking up the entirety of your display when you arrive at a website, and even just using regular pop-up ads.
