TEALS is an industry-wide pro-bono program that taps computer scientists to team-teach (with in-class teachers) fundamental and advanced placement computer science to high school students.

Tutorials are available for all ages-from pre-reader through high school in a range of subjects from art and music to computer science and math. Hour of Code activities are designed by an unprecedented coalition of technological partners, require no experience for your child to participate, and can be run on computers, iPads, iPhones, Androids or no device at all! Teachers and students throughout the state are gearing up for the Hour of Code for Every Student, a nationwide campaign to inspire student interest in computer coding and technology.

"We're at the point where most states are coming around to realizing that...computer science is going to need to be part of the education curriculum, and really they're all trying to figure out what's the right way to get there", Partovi told VentureBeat. The hour is an introduction to computer science to show the girls that anyone can learn the basics.

Forty students have completed all 50 boot camp missions and are awaiting the next 20 missions to be released in the Week of Code.

It's also been recognised that teaching code provides learners with stimulating mental exercises which support cognitive development, and help students develop skills which are essential for the 21st century, such as complex problem solving skills, critical thinking skills and creativity.

Your participation will earn you an RCOE Hour of Code digital badge and a certificate of participation from UCR Extension. This year's Computer Science Education Week started today and runs through December 10.

McCarthy will have her students build robots, computers and participate in the "hour of code". "Using Itelitek's CoderZ software platform, we built 50 virtual coding challenges that allow students to navigate robots through increasingly hard challenges".

Kids who learn to code today will absolutely become the next generation of science and technology innovators.

"If only 1 percent of the girls actively learning on Code.org continued past high school, they'd outnumber the gender gap in university CS", Partovi said. "Our mission is for everyone on the planet to achieve more, so when we see a disconnect like the one I just mentioned, it creates a sense of urgency to create more equity of opportunity for all students".
