But now Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos has assured fans the show will continue next year (18), with Robin Wright in a starring role.

Netflix is resuming production of flagship show House of Cards for one final season.

The show's finale is now set to focus on the character of Claire Underwood - played by Robin Wright - who, having succeeded her husband as president at the end of season five, looked directly at the camera, declaring: "My turn".

"We are excited to bring closure to fans", Mr Sarandos said, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Since that time, numerous other sexual harassment and sexual assault accusations have come out against Spacey.

Host Kevin Spacey speaks onstage during the 2017 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall on June 11, 2017 in New York City.

Anthony Rapp, the actor who was the first to come forward with allegations against Spacey, had been receiving vicious messages online by angry House of Cards fans, who were anxious because of Rapp's revelations that the show would be canceled altogether.

Following Rapp's allegation, Spacey said in a post on Twitter he does not remember the alleged incident. "The way to do that is having a lot of variety, and executing in multiple genres at a high level", Sarandos said, noting Netflix has made forays into unscripted shows and stand-up specials.

What do you think about this decision for House of Cards season 6? The character has always been despicable, and now that Spacey's alleged actions have come to light, one imagines there's not a strong desire to give Frank Underwood an emotional farewell.

The Old Vic has said that an internal investigation found 20 people claimed they had been the victims of inappropriate behaviour by Spacey, who was at the theatre between 2004 and 2015.

After the story broke MRC Studios, the company who oversees the show, promptly suspended Spacey.

A representative for Spacey did not respond to a request for comment. Director Ridley Scott digitally replaced Spacey with Christopher Plummer in his new film All the Money in the World.
