  • Houthi Leader Says Saleh Supporters' Behavior 'Unjustifiable', Urges Wisdom

Saleh's calls came during a live television address on Saturday, in which he vowed to change if Saudi Arabia stopped its "aggression" and lifted restrictions on Yemen, calling for "opening a new page with neighboring countries".

The Saudi-led coalition, consisting of several Arab-Sunni states, intervened in neighbouring Yemen to push back Houthi rebels and has since been trying to reinstate the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

On Saturday, the Houthis fired three mortar rounds towards Tareq's house, while Saleh's supporters burned Houthi military vehicles; there are casualties from both sides. but there are no specific figures as the fighting is still ongoing.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) said Saturday that the recent military campaign of Yemen's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh against the Houthi rebels would benefit the Yemeni people.

This is the beginning of a rebellion against the Houthi militias in Sana'a, it added.

MEE tried to contact Houthi sources for comment on the fighting, but they declined to speak. Some Houthi supporters reported news via social media that Houthi fighters still control most of Sana'a.

The coalition imposed a total blockade on Yemen after a rebel missile was shot down near Riyadh.

"The decision of Popular General Congress to take initiative and align itself with its people will free Yemen from loyal militias to Iran", he said in a statement released by Saudi SPA Agency, in reference to Saleh's party.

However, in a statement, Saleh's party, the GPC, ordered their supporters to defy Houthi's orders and to "defend their homeland, their revolution, and their unity".

The head of the Houthis' Ansarullah group warned that the biggest victor from what he described as Saleh's "sedition" was the Saudi-led coalition. The country has since fallen into chaos and Mr Saleh later joined the Houthis to drive Mr Hadi out of the capital in 2014.

Diab says the Saudi-coalition forces are not too far from the capital, and the Houthis have become widely despised due to shortages of food, water, medicine and money.

The GPC appealed to the army and security forces to remain neutral in the conflict.

For his part, leader of Huthi, Abdul Malik al-Huthi, has described Saleh's attitude as "sedition" and has been prepared for tribal arbitration, after warning that main beneficiary of this confrontation is Saudi coalition.

"It needs to be fully wound down if we are to avoid an atrocious humanitarian tragedy involving the loss of millions of lives, the like of which the world has not seen for many decades", UN Undersecretary for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock said Friday addressing reporters in Geneva.
