  • For Tulshidas Pawar the treatment meted out to his friend Kulbhushan Jadhav's mother and wife by the Pakistan authorities was ‘unacceptable

Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal on Monday said the meeting between convicted Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav and his family members did not come as result of any change in Pakistan's stance. The video statement, where he was seen briefly recounting the so-called confession, was apparently recorded sometime before he met his family.

The wife, right, and mother, centre, of Kulbhushan Jadhav are escorted by an Indian diplomat after their meeting with Jadhav at the foreign ministry in Islamabad.

"I have been treated with dignity and honour and in a very professional manner by the Pakistani authorities".

Here is one of the photos, which clearly shows the women believed to be Kulbhushan's mother wearing what appears to be a sweater and a dupatta that nowhere matches what she was shown wearing just some time ago.

Pawar said he and Kulbhushan's other friends would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to bring Jadhav back home at the earliest, he said.

Accompanied by Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh, Jadhav's wife Chetankul and mother Avanti met him at the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Islamabad.

Islamabad defended its stance of not granting diplomatic access to Jadhav, insisting he is a serving officer of the Indian navy and entered the country with the intent of spying and carrying out subversive acts. The mother and wife of Jadhav were being provided with a meeting with him in the light of "Islamic traditions and based on purely humanitarian grounds", Faisal had said. Roads leading to the Constitution Avenue, on which MOFA is located, were closed for traffic.

Pakistan issued visas to Jadhav's mother and wife on December 20 to meet him on humanitarian grounds. India maintains that Jadhav was kidnapped from Iran where he had business interests after retiring from the Indian Navy.

On April 10, a Field General Court Martial - under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, and Official Secrets Act, 1923 - awarded death sentence to Jadhav for espionage and sabotage.
