Iran: Protest over soaring cost of living

  • Iranians protest inflation govt 'mismanagement'

Usually the term "dictator" is addressed to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

Mashhad is the second most populous city in Iran and capital of Razavi Khorasan Province. The province bore the brunt of a November 14 natural disaster that killed at least 530 people and injured some 8,000 in Iran, leaving many others without shelter. Protests were also held in at least two other northeastern cities.

Videos posted online showed a crowd in Mashhad chanting "death to Rouhani" and "death to the dictator", and police using water cannon to disperse it.

Openly political protests are rare in Iran, where security services are omnipresent.

Iran's state-run IRNA news agency quoted Mohammad Rahim Norouzian, the Mashhad governor, as saying there was an illegal "No To High Prices" gathering in the city. "Forget Syria, think of us" read the protesters' banners.

Thousands of people also marched in protest in cities of Qom (central Iran), Hamedan (west), Isfahan (central Iran), Shiraz (southern Iran), Rasht, Sari and Qaemshahr (northern Iran), Qazvin (northwest of Tehran), Khorramshahr and Ahwaz (southwestern Iran), Khorramabad (western Iran), Quchan, Bojnourd, and Sabzevar (eastern Iran).

"Those who are behind such events will burn their own fingers".

A message calling for "No to high prices" protests was circulated recently on Telegram, he wrote in another tweet.

Prices on many essential products, including eggs, have increased up to 40 percent in recent days.

Rouhani's first vice-president, Eshaq Jahangiri, dismissed the demonstrations in a speech on Friday, and said economic issues were "being used as an excuse and something else, behind the curtain, is going on", the Iranian Students News Agency reported.
