  • Israel demolishes tunnel 'belonging to Hamas' from Gaza into its territory

Hamas has built a sophisticated network of terror tunnels in the Gaza Strip and running into Israel, used for storing weapons, smuggling and terrorist infiltrations into Israel.

Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman, told reporters on Sunday that Israel used a new set of "tools" to destroy the tunnel. He said that, based on intelligence, the Israeli army believed the tunnel belonged to Hamas, the militant organization that runs Gaza.

An incomplete tunnel running for more than a kilometer from Gaza into southern Israel has been destroyed, Israel's army announced on Sunday.

During the 2014 summer war with Israel, Hamas terrorists on several occasions made their way into Israel through terror tunnels, although they did not manage to reach civilian areas.

The IDF has again exposed and neutralized a threat emanating from a Hamas terror tunnel. Hamas did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

The two tunnels discovered in recent weeks were found where the barrier has not yet been completed.

Israeli politicians hailed the news and suggested the detection and demolition system might be about to give Israel a significant edge in the threat posed by tunnels.

The operation combined airstrikes targeting Hamas infrastructure in the Gaza Strip by the IDF on Saturday and Friday, which were carried out after the Islamist movement had called for an "intifada" against Israel. The decision has infuriated the Palestinians, who seek Israel-annexed east Jerusalem as their own capital. Since 2007, following the winning of Hamas in the elections in Gaza, Israel has imposed a blockade on the strip. In response, Israeli tanks and aircraft hit two terror targets in Gaza.

"The battle for Jerusalem continues hour by hour above- and below-ground, and thousands of jihadist fighters are working and preparing at this moment in the darkest conditions, equipped for the battle to liberate Jerusalem", the statement said.
