  • Fodder scam case was strong enough to punish Lalu, says ex-CBI official

After being convicted in the fodder scam case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of more than Rs 89 lakh from Deoghar Treasury, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav today launched a scathing attack on the BJP and accused it of playing dirty and immoral political games.

"How come former Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra has been acquitted in the same fodder scam case in which Lalu Prasad is convicted?". The CBI court will pronounce the punishment to Yadav on January 3 and he was taken to Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi. On December 18, 2006, a special CBI court in Ranchi acquitted both Lalu and Rabri in the case.

Senior RJD leaders Abdul Bari Siddiqui and Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said that the party will continue to fight the legal battle in the higher courts.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi, who was one of the petitioners in the fodder scam PIL, which resulted in CBI inquiry, said: "This had to happen".

Lalu Prasad and other convicts were taken into custody immediately after the pronouncement of the verdict.

An offshoot of the fodder scam, a disproportionate assets case was registered by CBI in 1998 against Lalu and Rabri, the latter named co-accused for allegedly abetting the crime.

"To hide its failures, false rhetoric and to get votes, the BJP uses every dirty immoral trick in politics to change the public perception of its opponents", he said. The fake bills also included claims of carrying fodder on four-wheelers - their registration numbers later turned out to be of scooters in several cases. In Patna, the party said it will challenge the verdict in the High Court (HC). "This has created confusion among the people also", he said.

Union Health Minister and BJP leader JP Nadda was quoted saying that Lalu Yadav was not accepting the verdict and was instead resorting to blaming the BJP. In that case, he was sentenced to five years in jail and fined Rs 25 lakh for fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 37.5 crore from the Chaibasa treasury.

In 2013, after spending three months in the same jail in relation to the fodder scam case, Lalu had moved out of jail premises riding an elephant. While the two Jharkhand cases are pending trial, he has now been convicted in two other Jharkhand cases.
