Mitch Marsh Named For Third Ashes Test

  • Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan added a record 237-run stand for the fifth wicket

Three overs later Malan was celebrating with a pull for four but the fireworks, as the shadows lengthened in Western Australia, came from Bairstow who carved the tired Australia attack apart as England surged to their highest score of the series to close on 305 for 4 in a telling reminder they may be down, but are far from out. England's Jonny Bairstow watches as Australia's Mitchell Starc appeals unsuccessfully for LBW during the second day of the third Ashes cricket test match. Bairstow took the job at WACA.

England had resumed on 305 for four, with Malan on 110 and Bairstow 75 not out, after Root won the toss and sent his team in to bat on day one.

Australia did briefly threaten to run through the tourists much they have with the ball through the winter, reducing England to 131 for 4 but Malan and Bairstow took the day away from them.

Malan and Bairstow dominated the first hour of play. The right-hander was surrounded by controversies after reports of him giving a "headbutt" to Australian opener Cameron Bancroft at a bar made the headlines during the first Test in Brisbane.

Bairstow (119) and Dawid Malan (140) built on their fifth-wicket partnership at the WACA Friday before the hosts fought back.

The keeper, promoted one spot up the order for this game, celebrated his century by headbutting his helmet - a nod to the infamous bar greeting of Cameron Bancroft that resulted in a midnight curfew for the visitors.

Malan skied a delivery from Nathan Lyon (1-73) and substitute fielder Peter Handscomb took a wonderful diving catch.

Starc removed Bairstow's middle stump in the following over, with Hazlewood removing tail-ender Craig Overton for two.
