MLB Rumors: Giants, Cardinals Have Giancarlo Stanton Trade Frameworks In Place

  • Report Giants Remain in Contact With Pirates Regarding McCutchen

The 13-year, $325 million deal he signed with the Marlins back in 2014 came complete with a full no-trade clause, so he has to approve any deal that gets done.

And although the Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly are Stanton's first choice, it's the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants that recently have emerged as the most likely landing spots. Stanton's people have received approval for a meeting with the Cardinals, but it's unclear when that meeting will take place, sources said. He is rumored to prefer a deal to his hometown Dodgers, although Los Angeles is also under payroll constraints and may not match up in a potential trade. The Marlins are reportedly willing to accept the Giants offer of second baseman Joe Panik alongside top prospects Tyler Beede and Chris Shaw in exchange for Stanton should San Francisco be willing to assume at least $250 million of the remaining money owed to the right fielder.

There are estimates that a move from Florida to California could cost Stanton an additional $20-27 million in state taxes over the 10-year term of his contract.

The Dodgers were still in contact with the Marlins as of Sunday, per Morosi, though the talks haven't progressed as far as those with the Giants or Cardinals.

The and are among the teams that also have been linked to the reigning NL MVP. The player's reps have already met with the San Francisco Giants' brass and were granted permission by the Miami franchise to pursue similar conversations with the St. Louis Cardinals.
