  • The 2018 MLS Super Draft will take place on January 19 in Philadelphia. The Portland Timbers have four selections in the four-round SuperDraft

FC Cincinnati has shattered all attendance records for minor-league soccer - it averaged 21,199 fans in 2017 - and drew three crowds of greater than 30,000 for its home Open Cup games.

None of the 12 expansion candidates - even Nashville - really come close to having the support that Cincinnati and Sacramento have shown.

Sacramento is expected to be a shoo-in for the other franchise due to the fact that it has already started construction of a soccer stadium.

The league is expected to announce Wednesday that Nashville will have an MLS team and plans to build a $250 million, 27,500-seat stadium, according to a report from Sports Illustrated.

"League officials and the MLS Expansion Committee will continue to work with the four finalists and plan to have more details shortly", a MLS statement reads. The new teams will not begin play until 2020.

Also slated to appear is billionaire John Ingram, the lead investor of an expansion group backed by the Wilf brothers, who own the NFL's Minnesota Vikings.

A second expansion team will go to Cincinnati, Sacramento or Detroit.

Businessman Dan Gilbert, Pistons Vice Chairman Arn Tellem, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, top Gilbert aide Matt Cullen, Detroit Lions President Rod Wood, and Matt Rossetti, president of Detroit-based architects Rossetti Inc. spearheaded Detroit's pitch to bring an MLS team to Ford Field. If either Sacramento or Cincinnati doesn't get a franchise now, they're nailed on to join a year later.
