In June, the German bank rejected requests for account records by Democrats in the US House of Representatives to provide details of the president's finances.

A source close to the matter said to AFP that Germany's biggest bank had received a subpoena for documents related to its business dealings with the United States president, after Bloomberg News and the German business daily Handelsblatt first reported a summons by special counsel Robert Mueller.

A lawyer for President Donald Trump says it's not true that special counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed financial records relating to the president.

Mueller is investigating alleged Russian attempts to influence the election, and potential collusion by Trump aides.

Mr Mueller is investigating claims of collusion between Mr Trump and Russian Federation.

In a statement, the bank said it cooperates with official investigators but would not discuss individual cases. "We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources".

Deutsche Bank has loaned the Trump Organisation hundreds of millions of dollars for real estate ventures and is one of the few major lenders that has given large amounts of credit to Mr Trump in the past decade.

In May, five Democratic members of the House of Representatives sent a letter to Deutsche Bank CEO John Cryan asking the bank to turn in any records relating to Trump's accounts and any ties to Russian Federation. That figure includes a $170-million loan Trump took out to finish a hotel in Washington. Last week Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, pleaded guilty to a single count of making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The bank has settled U.S. and United Kingdom investigations into how it helped Russian clients move money out of the country, but a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice is still outstanding. Mueller's investigation had expanded to examine a broad range of transactions involving the president's businesses, including dealings by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, a person familiar with the probe told Bloomberg News after the publication of the Times interview.

President Trump's legal team confirms it is aware of media reports related to the subpoena, but there was no immediate comment from the White House or the president's attorneys.
