An investigative piece by the New York Times reveals a secretive Pentagon UFO program.
The so-called Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Programme spent AU$31 million a year investigating reports of unidentified flying objects.
It was the brainchild of former Nevada Democrat Senator Harry Reid, who pushed for its creation in 2007.
Officials with the program also studied videos of encounters between unknown objects and American military aircraft, including one released in August of a white oval object, about the size of a commercial plane, chased by two USA navy fighter jets from the aircraft carrier Nimitz off the coast of San Diego in 2004. Most of the government's funding into the program is said to went to funding an aerospace research company that is working with NASA "to produce expandable craft for humans to use in space".
The AATIP was set up by former Democratic Senator for Nevada, Harry Reid.
One of the reasons the Pentagon funded the program, according to a Congressional staffer who spoke with the outlet, was that officials believed the aircraft might actually be ultra high-tech products of China or Russian Federation that warranted further examination. Ted Stevens of Alaska, Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, and John Glenn of OH, the first American to orbit the Earth, who told Reid the federal government should take a serious look at UFOs.
The program's backers said that the program still exists without funding and continues to investigate "episodes" brought forth by service members while carrying out other tasks in the Defense Department, The Times reported.
The mystery into whether or not we're alone in the universe has been a constant question for over 6 decades and it looks like the Defense Department wanted some answers.
"I think it's one of the good things I did in my congressional service", Reid said.
Bigelow told the Times that, "Internationally, we are the most backward country in the world on this issue".
"This is about science and national security. If America doesn't take the lead in answering these questions, others will", Reid wrote in a subsequent tweet. "I've done something that no one has done before". "I've done something that no one has done before", he added. It was run out of the Pentagon by Luis Elizondo, a military intelligence official, before officially winding down in 2012.
Apart from Elizondo, the consortium also employs a former CIA contractor named Harold E. Puthoff, as well as another former Defense Department official, Christopher K. Mellon, who was a deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence.
