  • Princess Michael Sorry for Racist Brooch ... I'm Going to Retire It

Princess Michael of Kent has apologised for wearing a "racist blackamoor" brooch to the Queen's Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen's cousin-in-law had been heavily criticised for wearing the Blackamoor brooch to the meal, which was also attended by Prince Harry's mixed race fiancee Meghan Markle.

A spokesman for Princess Michael told the Daily Telegraph, "Princess Michael is very sorry and distressed that [the brooch] has caused offence". The jewelry, dubbed "blackamoor" jewelry is a bust of a black person adorned with a gold crown and colorful crystals. The piece of jewelry was apparently a gift, which the royal has worn "many times before, without controversy", according to the site. Some believe the images fetishize slaves of African descent. TMZ leaked images of the bridal dress, revealing that if the deal between a palace and a fashion house closes, Meghan will wear a highly feminine creation, a wedding dress that embraces her silhouette and has long sleeves.

Princess Michael's decision to wear the brooch comes as Markle and Harry's engagement has renewed discussions about the ongoing culture of racism and classism in British high society.

Many fans of both the royal family and Markle criticized the move, saying it was offensive to wear the brooch given that Markle is biracial.

Princess Michael quickly earned criticism on social media. In 2004 she was accused of insulting a party of black diners at a stylish NY restaurant when she is alleged to have told them to "go back to the colonies" in a dispute over noise. I wanted experiences from Cape Town to right up in northern Mozambique.

Markle, who is engaged to marry Prince Harry in May of next year, spent her first Christmas with the royals at Buckingham Palace this week.

"But I think you know at the end of the day I'm really just proud of who I am and where I come from, and we have never put any focus on that".
