If he attempts to continue to fight it throughout the course of the season, he could possibly run the risk of having to serve that suspension at the start of next season, when he may be healthy, though given the lateness in the season of his Achilles injury, that is no guarantee, either. The suspension will ultimately cost him $182,352, though it's less than the $2 million he would have lost had he restructured his deal with Baltimore in August.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh confirmed Monday that Smith will go on IR, and said the team knew of the pending suspension before Sunday's game.
As Schefter mentioned, Smith will not try to appeal the suspension, a practical move since he'll be able to undergo the punishment right away even while he's recuperating from the injury.
Smith suffered a torn Achilles in the second quarter of Sunday's 44-20 win over the Lions and is expected to be placed on injured reserve this week.
Smith, the Ravens' first-round pick in 2011, matched his career high with three interceptions this season. Second-year running back Kenneth Dixon was suspended for the first four games of the season, but suffered a season-ending meniscus injury before the season began.
Rookie first-round pick Marlon Humphrey replaced Smith and was beaten for two deep passes, which were basically jump balls with Lions receiver Marvin Jones Jr.
Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith was done for the year anyway.
On the season, the Ravens rank third in total passing yardage allowed and eighth in yards per attempt. Smith would then have been eligible for the postseason if Baltimore made the playoffs. The Ravens (7-5) now occupy the AFC's second wild card spot.
