  • Guardiola wary of bans before derby

The City boss claimed he was merely complimenting the England midfielder on what a good player he was.

"What Redmond said in his statement, I admire him as a player and thank him for his comments".

In the immediate aftermath of Premier League leaders City snatching the points through Raheem Sterling's 96th-minute victor, Guardiola approached Redmond on the field and gesticulated in an animated fashion.

"I spoke with Oriol Romeu as well, with (Virgil) van Dijk and with my players as well". "I have to do that, hopefully I can improve", he added. Mourinho was also reluctant to discuss Guardiola's heated post-match discussion with Southampton forward Nathan Redmond for similar reasons. I just wanted them to play'.

The City manager, who expressed "regret" for the Redmond confrontation, must give his written observations to the FA before 6pm on Monday.

"I told him I was doing what my manager had asked me to do in the game". The can do that with me, with Nathan and with The Sun.

And he did not want to discuss the latter on Friday, saying: "Forget me against Wenger".

'Yes he was very passionate, intense and aggressive but he was only very complimentary and positive to me, ' the Saints man told his followers on Twitter.

"You can agree or not, but if I'm explaining what happened and the people don't believe me then let's cancel our press conferences and just play the games".

Guardiola insisted that his aggression was as a result of Southampton's time-wasting. All the managers want to help their players because if they play bad we'll be sacked.

"You know - if you are my friends, don't ask me the question, because you know I get into problems".

Guardiola said he would "never judge the way opponents play against one of my teams". "It's the same as I do to beat them". Nothing negative or offensive was said towards me from Pep and that's what makes him one of the best managers in world football.
