Ryanair confirms it will recognise pilot unions

  • Ryanair to hold meeting with union for first time

After a turbulent few months, which included a raft of pilot roster-related cancellations, a spotlight on pilots' conditions and the threat of strike action, Ryanair agreed to talks with pilot unions December 15.

It said it will recognise these unions as long as they establish committees of Ryanair pilots to deal with Ryanair issues, as Ryanair will not engage with pilots who fly for competitor airlines in Ireland or elsewhere.

Pilots' union IMPACT has said there is an urgent need to end the uncertainty.

RYANAIR'S director of personnel Eddie Wilson has described the first meeting between airline reps and trade union IMPACT this evening as very positive.

"We think this is disappointing given all that's been said in the media over the last five days by the company".

The first ever talks between unions and management at Ryanair will take place later.

"Recognising unions will be a significant change for Ryanair, but we have delivered radical change before, most recently when we launched Ryanair Labs and our highly successful Always Getting Better customer improvement programme in 2013".

He said: "We have meetings with the German unions tomorrow and Portuguese on Thursday, and we have meetings set up throughout January".

The meeting is scheduled for later today just 24 hours before planned pilot strikes in Ireland, Italy and Portugal.

The decision by one of Europe's largest carriers to deal with unions after years of trenchant opposition follows threatened pre-Christmas strike action by Irish-based pilots, which was called off earlier this week. The union called on Ryanair to talk to flight attendants' representatives too.

However IMPACT, the union involved, has already warned that the strike is suspended rather than cancelled.

Today, Ryanair will meet with a workers union in a move that is historic for the company. "We're decisive in it", he said.
