  • Bristol Salvation Army thousands short of red kettle goal

While sifting through donations at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Atlanta, a Salvation Army employee found a pure gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin in one of the kettles.

"The money that we raise helps pay for rent, phone, electricity, after-school programs", he explained.

Money raised through the "Red Kettle" campaign goes to providing meals to area families on both Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as facilitating "adoptions" so children younger than 12 years old will receive gifts on Christmas morning.

In Quincy, red kettle donors collect only two weekends per year.

It's another color of coin showing up in kettles this season that has these guys excited.

"This is a 1979 gold Krugerrand one-ounce", Gimenez said.

Shane Lason is the other bell ringer to strike gold. "I lost a toe, and I got sick and everything and my apartment was gone", he said.

The Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Campaign has put out an urgent plea for donations as they are still 25 per cent away from their $310,000 goal. As people approached the entrance, O'Mara joyfully engaged them with a nod or a brief comment - not a conversation starter or an attempt to solicit charity, but something warm and cheerful they could take or leave at their will.

Additionally, someone recently gave The Salvation Army an impressive coin collection worth $1,500.

"We are a people of faith so we are looking for our Christmas miracle as some would say and we're going to hold out hope until the last penny is covered tomorrow evening", said George.
