Tennis champion Serena Williams will return to the court in Abu Dhabi this week after almost a year away from the sport.

The 36-year-old, who gave birth to Alexis Jr in September, is planning to make a competitive return at the Australian Open next month.

The 23-grand slam victor has not played in tournaments since winning the Australian Open 11 months ago - a feat even more remarkable given she was already two months pregnant at the time.

Williams' last tournament win was even more legendary, given she was two-months pregnant at the time.

While she hasn't confirmed whether she'll be playing at Melbourne Park at next year's Aus Open, the tournament's director Craig Tilley has said it's "very likely" that she will be back to defend her title when the comp kicks off on January 15. Her participation signals her intent to play in Australia after the recent birth of her first child.

Williams's name appears on the entry list for the tournament, which runs January 15-28.

Serena Williams will play World No. 7 Jelena Ostapenko in an exhibition match on December 30.

Two athletes have withdrawn from the Mubadala event: the men's world No. 1 player, Rafael Nadal, and the three-time Grand Slam victor Stan Wawrinka. She will face Latvia's Ostapenko at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in the first year that women will be taking part, tournament organizers announced Sunday.

Williams and Ostapenko will be the first women to participate in the 10th edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, which has long marked the beginning of the men's global tennis season.

So if you've just popped a kid out yourself, don't feel pressured to, like, go play a Grand Slam or anything, ya hear?
