  • Venus Williams cleared of wrongdoing over fatal car crash

Tennis superstar Venus Williams will not be charged in a crash that killed a passenger in another auto - and neither will the other driver, Florida authorities said.

Now, police said the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion was not at fault and "Based on this investigation and relevant Florida statutes, no charges will be filed".

The incident occurred when Barson's vehicle careered into the right side of Williams' auto as the 5-time Wimbledon champion drove through an intersection in Palm Beach Gardens.

At first, authorities said Williams ran a red light and thus caused the crash that injured Jerome Barson, 78, who died of those injuries two weeks later.

Still, Jerome Barson's estate has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Williams seeking unspecified damages.

According to ESPN.com news services, police said Williams "was cut off by another vehicle, setting off a chain of events that seconds later resulted in a fatal crash with a third auto".

However, the final report found that neither Williams nor the Barsons had violated the rule and no charges would be filed in the vehicle collision.

The lead investigator in the case, Officer David Dowling, said in his report that security video footage showed Williams had entered the intersection on a green light.

An investigation found that Williams had a green light when she entered a busy intersection before a vehicle turning left in front of her forced her to stop.

"I was caught in the middle", Williams told a responding officer, according to Alanez and Pesantes.

Williams has not commented publicly on the report reportedly clearing her of blame. "I'm completely speechless", she said.

The Barson family's attorney, Michael Steinger, was not satisfied by police conclusions, adding that the suit will be pursued. "The report is further inaccurate because the video surveillance does not indicate the color of Ms. Williams' light and therefore does not support the police department's conclusion".
